Summary II: Bootleg culture

Bootlegging, or simply “remixing”, is a new trend of art production that swipes through the world. It is easy to do and fun that it gains surprisingly increasing popularity. However, for basically the same reason, it remains controversial that it wanders around the border of legality and illegality—it is creative but lack originality. Bootlegging is facing great hindrance in its development. Artists whose art works are used often turn down requests of permission from bootleggers to prevent plagiarism and protect their reputation. Existing bootleggers do not offer help often in order to maintain their place and competitiveness in the field. Bootlegging is also a nightmare to record industries that they act to keep bootlegger underground. However, the public hold an ambiguous view on bootlegging. It is energizing pop music that attracts and entertains everyone. Meanwhile, it is on the border of plagiarism that challenge the moral standard. And in fact, typical maintream artworks comprise combination of ideas that art production is somehow transferring towards bootlegging. But anyway, bootlegging is getting popular. How will bootlegging develop remains a mystery. We may make way for bootlegging like we did to Hippop, or we may kept it silent. But whatever happens, the development will continue, and crash of ideas will appear.
